Summer Riptide Reflections (Part Three)

In our last of this three-part series, we look at what it takes to get people involved in something extraordinary. Recall, you are aware of something amazing and you want to convey that to those close to you, but how? Given our society views the possibilities for interns and the work they accomplish as limited, the summer intern reflections are an excellent source for this inquiry. As you read, keep in mind this is what the interns said after working in Agile Rainmakers’ Summer Riptide program for just one month.

Summer Activity Yields Inspired Talk

What can happen in one month working with interns? They lack professional experience, they don’t really know what they are doing, and they are too immature to steer the ship, right? Well, the Summer Riptide program proves otherwise. Some direct quotes from interns after four weeks:

  • …there is no problem that cannot be resolved with communication. This lesson especially resonates with me because it’s simultaneously simple and powerful. The implied action is clear: communicate.

  • By sharing what we accomplish every day, I have shifted my attention away from the process and more towards the results.

  • …I have learned that I am personally inspired by making a difference. At Agile, we only partner with clients in which we can definitively add value. There are no projects that do not contribute to the success of our clients, and I think this is why I am loving the work so much. Our deliverables are not a drop in the ocean, but much more like the hose watering and cultivating a garden…I love knowing that our work, and thus we, make a difference.

Imagine learning these basics as an intern. Simple ideas taught in an internship program provide learning, growth, and fun! How many times do you notice that issues around the office – or home office, as it were – could be handled with some simple communication? How often would a simple acknowledgment have made a difference? How much time could be saved by having an eye on results and not just process? What difference could love and inspiration make at work?

It’s Undeniable

Anyone can say something is exceptional, and anyone can point to opportunities for enhanced performance. What will have people interested and involved in something truly great is when they see results produced, why they matter, and what pathway leads to engagement.

Success changes things. We value success so much that it literally changes our minds about people. This is most notable when someone gets away with doing something long enough without integrity and ends up with lots of resources. Since they were successful in attaining such grandeur, they are given a pass. This happens with people, companies, and governments. The good news is success done with integrity produces the same result, though watch the cynics come out of the woodwork. The bottom line is: nothing sells better than success and the possibility of success for oneself and one’s community.

In the coming weeks, the interns’ successes will be shared in this newsletter. Their results are undeniable. Success attracts connection and engagement. What undeniable successes have influenced you in your life?

Here's to you and your awesome future.

Until then, keep your feet on the board and keep riding your wave!
