Dam Impressive (Intern Edition)
In business and life we often expect things to go smoothly. Somehow we feel that everything should go according to plan. Then, we find something getting in the way and we are left feeling down. But what if the twists and turns and stoppages actually served a purpose? Now that would be an interesting perspective – and that’s what we found.
Build Up
In the U.S. there are over 250,000 rivers. And, if you asked each river – assuming you could understand water babble – you would hear something like, “With gravity on our side, there ain’t nothing stopping us. Oceans, here we come!” That may be so, eventually, but it is not that simple. Why? Well, for one, there are over 91,000 dams in the U.S. And, you will be surprised to know that two-thirds of all dams are privately owned. So, chances are our talking river is just going to have to wait.
What’s the purpose of the delays, I mean, dams? Well, there are numerous including human recreation and flood risk reduction. Let’s look at three: irrigation, water supply, and hydroelectric. So, we build up water to grow food, drink water, and have energy to live our lives. Seems like the wait is worth it, no?
This applies to the entertainment business too. Rather than release a movie the moment it is done, we delay it. For months, we tell everyone it is coming and really build up suspense. The airwaves, screens, and hydroelectric powered billboards are flooded with ads in anticipation. Then, at the chosen day the sluice gates open, the movie is released and the creativity flows.
Dam Former Agile Interns
And so it is, my former intern and extraordinary recent hire Hector Betanzos created a 90-second Instagram Reel for a client that is so good Agile Rainmakers had no choice but to delay its release. We dammed it up to let the suspense build. Those dam former Agile interns are so empowered to autonomously create awesomeness – this is what happens. Just as water builds up in a dam, the suspense had to too.
What’s this great video about? Is it really that good? Rumor has it, Hector is actually in big trouble. Rumor also says he ran amok on the Island of Nantucket. If so, will Rob forgive Hector? What happened to things going smoothly?
